Based on our experience we’ve put together a list of answers to the most commonly asked questions about canine hydrotherapy and our association. If you have more specific concerns or questions for your dog or situation please ask your therapist. Alternatively you can contact us for more guidance.

What If My Dog Doesn’t Like Water?

Hydrotherapists are trained in therapeutic handling and work with your dog rather than on your dog and will take time to help them adapt to the new environment. We use a range of motivators such as treats, toys and/or owner involvement to encourage movement, participation in exercises and enjoyment of sessions in the water.

You will be pleasantly surprised by your dog’s willingness to engage with the Hydrotherapist after a couple of sessions. If you have any concerns, please speak to your Hydrotherapist directly.

My Dog Loves Water, How Is This Different to Regular Swimming?

The big difference between free swimming and Hydrotherapy are the controlled conditions, temperature of the water and expertise of the therapist. In hydrotherapy we use the environment and therapist skills to help the muscles work more efficiently, and without risk of sudden cramps or chaotic movement.

In particular, for dogs suffering from arthritis or any other joint problems we want muscles to be relaxed as they are moving rather than contracting due to cold. The therapist also helps your dog to move correctly and evenly to help build better joint and muscle balance, protect tendons and ligaments and improve joint strength.

Free swimming is fun but not therapeutic and there is a risk of further damage to weakened muscles and joints through uneven movement and compensation.

How Do I Know The Water Is Safe and Hygienic?

As part of our professional accreditation process, each member must be trained in water quality processes and have water sanitation and testing protocols in place. All machinery and water undergo regular readings and testing to ensure it meets quality standards.

Can I Participate In The Session Too?

We encourage owners to be involved in the session from outside of the pool. Please follow the instructions of your Hydrotherapist as they aim to facilitate the best therapeutic outcome for your dog. Due to OSH regulations and to focus therapy on your dog we don’t allow swimming with your dog during a session.

Can I Bring More Than One Dog And Play Fetch In The Pool?

The therapy pool and treadmill are strictly designed for use by one dog at a time and under the direction of a therapist. Toys and games may be used by your therapist to motivate your dog, but this is under their direction only. This ensures both safety and efficacy of the treatment.

How Many Sessions Will My Dog Need?

The number of sessions will vary depending upon the condition we are treating. After initial evaluation your therapist will be able to give you an indication of the treatment plan, timing and any at home exercises or limitations that you can do to help facilitate recovery.

Is This Covered By Pet Insurance?

Some insurers and policies will cover this but please check with your insurer as to whether this is covered. If you are going to be claiming insurance please let your therapist know and keep all of the receipts for you to submit for reimbursement.

My Dog Is Shy Of Strangers, Will This Freak Them Out?

Professional therapists recognise that every dog is different and many of our members have additional qualifications in dog behavior and techniques to help dogs adjust to therapeutic handling. Please be sure to tell your therapist if you have any concerns about your dog’s comfort with new people or situations so they can make this experience both safe and comfortable for all.

What does choosing a member from the Association mean for me and my dog?

Choosing a facility from our Association means you are assured that the therapists are professionally trained and will abide by our code of conduct and standards.

All of our members hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in hydrotherapy and first aid. Assistants to the therapists must also be trained to equivalent standards. As part of our membership each therapist undergoes continuous professional development to ensure they are keeping up to date with best practise and latest research.

Our therapists work with your veterinarian, specialist or other industry professional as needed, and will keep detailed records of progress to share with you and your dog’s medical team.

Premises and facilities are maintained to the highest standards and are audited bi-annually to ensure these are upheld. In addition, all facilities must comply with the relevant New Zealand legislation for health and safety and carry public liability insurance.

Animal welfare is a primary consideration for our profession. Our Association has additional standards to those set by New Zealand legislation. These additional measures are in place to promote the safety and comfort of dogs undergoing therapy, and to support the therapeutic process. Our members do not use tools such as restraint poles, and where possible the therapist is present in the pool or treadmill at all times. Where possible patients wear a suitable, non-restrictive harness during therapy to ensure safe handling and promote therapeutic handling.

Only professional members of our Association can display the Association Tick.

What do I do if I have a question or concern about a member from the Association?

The NZACH committee governs our members and we have a complaints procedure in place should you require it. Please email us to request a copy of this procedure so we can best assist you in resolving this.
